Two Hours That Changed Europe: The Battle of Mohács, 1526

Synopsis
A twenty-year-old king with an empty treasury rides out to stop the largest army in Europe, and in one afternoon by a flooded stream his kingdom loses its head, opening a 150-year struggle between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs.
In the summer of 1526 Suleiman the Magnificent’s army crossed the River Drava at Osijek, and the Hungarian army did nothing to stop it. On the plain of Mohács, Louis II’s heavy cavalry charged into chained gun carts; the king drowned in the rain-swollen Csele stream as he fled.
Five hundred years on, the dead of Mohács are still telling us things. A study published in 2025 found that most of those in the battlefield’s mass graves had fallen in the fighting, and among the skeletons examined there was not a single gunshot wound. After Mohács, Hungary had two kings at once.
