About us
The written record of the days of yore
This magazine exists to take history out of the textbook and into the pub, the café and the bus.
YORESCRIPT is a monthly popular history magazine and documentary channel, written in the tradition of the great British popular history titles such as BBC History Magazine and HistoryExtra: serious about evidence, generous with storytelling, and open to everyone.
Each issue brings one great moment of history to life with full-page illustrations, battle maps, comic-strip chapters, “Fact or legend?” evidence boxes and museum galleries. No footnotes, no dull sentences, but nothing made up either: every fact has a source behind it, and we list them all at the back of each issue.
We tell the history of the Ottoman world, the Turks and the East from their own sources, and the surprising stories of the rest of the world with the same curiosity. Every month we also look back at that month in British history.
A public service at heart
We believe good history is a public good. Knowing where we came from makes us better neighbours and better citizens. That is why our illustrations are always labelled when they are reconstructions, and why we correct our mistakes openly: spot one, write to us.
